Inside structures live varying types of spaces that are used for divers purposes whether it be for relaxing, working, or plainly enjoyment. The designers of spaces, architects, define spaces by the structures they bring together to create a “feeling”. An example that demonstrates the usage of structure to create space is the Gorge Pompidou center.
Walking into a glass atrium on a sunny afternoon may give the impression of being outside yet the glass clearly defines the inside space from the outside. On the inside of structures like that of the glass atrium the space is influence by the inspiration of the architect. An architect creates spaces whether they are defined as light and airy or small and cozy. The thought put into defining these spaces reflect the mark of a great architect. Architects consider if the spaces should be symmetrical or linear as well as many other forms of defining a space. They propose to themselves the question, how would one move through the space? Would a person spiral through the space to reach a new space or would the architect combine space to create a layer approach to a space?
A Structure that stands out amidst the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau style characterized in Paris is the Gorge Pompidou Center. This structure creates an open glass enclosed space that has no traditional walls as well as conserves the limited outside space in the streets of Paris. The architects Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano designed a linear space that combined the four great institutions – a modern art museum, a public library, a design center, and an institute of contemporary music – to make a cultural hub. As before mentioned, architects create structure to define the spaces we inhabit.
Creating a space that is cozy or open is the architect’s job all the while asking questions about the purpose of such a space. In the example of the glass atrium, it purpose is to demonstrate the outside sky while providing an inside space that can be controlled by the user. The space in the Gorge Pompidou center combines four institutions to make a cultural hub that resides in a linear structure.
